Arcadia is a beautiful, upscale, residential community in Southern California. Its name is a Greek word meaning “unspoiled land.” The city was settled during the Gold Rush in the 1880s. It was platted in 1888. It is located in Los Angeles County, about 10 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. It is known for its neighborhoods, parks, and schools. Although the community has a relatively high homeownership rate, the median home appreciation was only 4% in the last ten years. In a recent survey, a majority of Arcadia households reported speaking only English at home.
In 1903, Elias J. Baldwin incorporated Arcadia, and the next year, the city began a development boom that included the construction of parks and public infrastructure. As a result of this boom, Arcadia’s commercial area was expanding. The Arcadia Board of Trade grew, and was formed in September 1921. They started by having monthly dues of 25 cents. After two years, they were granted a charter. The Arcadia Rotary Club was also chartered.
The Arcadia Public Library was built near City Hall, and served the community until 1961. There was a need for three new schools. Two of these, the Foothills Middle School and the Arcadia High School, opened in 1951. Since then, the community has developed into a highly-respected school district, and offers a variety of excellent recreational activities.
The Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden, located in Arcadia, is a 127-acre historical site. Visitors can learn more about the history of the area at the Arcadia Historical Museum. Arcadia’s crown jewel is the world-class thoroughbred racing facility of Santa Anita. The park, which opened in 1934, is regarded as one of the best facilities in the nation. However, Arcadia’s housing economy has maintained a balanced mix of quality economic development and residential growth. When it comes to shopping, you can find a variety of shops at the Arcadia Mall, including a cinema, restaurant, arcade, and hotel.
