Root Canal Treatment

Root Canal Therapy, or endodontic treatment, is necessary when a tooth’s pulp (nerve and blood supply) becomes infected or inflamed. This condition is also known as an abscessed tooth, and it can cause serious pain and discomfort.

An abscessed tooth is caused by the penetration of bacteria. If a small chip forms in the tooth, bacteria can find its way into the pulp, destroying it. This problem is a grave one and can lead to many side effects and future issues, like:

  • Bitter taste in mouth and/or bad breath
  • Pain when chewing
  • Swelling in mouth and neck
  • Sensitivity to heat and cold
  • Fever
  • Loose teeth
  • Tooth loss
  • Shift of the remaining teeth

It is important to protect yourself from the symptoms and problems that come with an abscessed tooth.

How Can Root Canals Help?

The Root canal treatment may be the only way to save the tooth from requiring an extraction. Root canals consist of removing the nerves that lie within the root of the tooth. If the damaged pulp is no longer within the tooth, the tooth can function properly again without any of the sensitivity.

In a root canal, Dr. Young will make a small hole in the tooth and remove the ruined pulp. He will then clean out the area and the surrounding root canals.

Finally, he will seal and fill the tooth. Often, we will reinforce a tooth treated with root canal therapy with a crown.
